Tooth Abrasion

The problem can be physiological (in some cases also pathological) and is caused by a physical agent continuously rubbing against the dental surface, leading to a loss of enamel and dentin substance. Dental enamel containing vital mineral content is consumed little by little, day after day.

Causes

Abrasion is caused by the contact between the dental elements and mechanical forces (such as brushing teeth too hard with rigid bristles). It appears as a loss of hard and soft tissues of the tooth (especially in the cervical area) with a wedge or “V” shape.
Other determining causes could be:

• Bruxismo: grinding teeth damages dental enamel

• Excessive or incorrect use of abrasive pastes and toothpaste: using handmade tooth whitening products frequently as well as too much abrasive toothpaste can affect tooth enamel

• Tooth aging

Symptoms

The symptom may be a feeling of discomfort with an increase in sensitivity to heat and cold and a visible yellowing of the teeth.

Treatment/Prevention

– Treatment: Specialist visit and implementation of conservative methods. Discontinuation of the underlying causes.

– Prevention: Correct daily use of soft toothbrush, floss and interdental brush.
