Xerostomia
It refers to the dryness of the oral cavity, or dry mouth. There is a limited intake of saliva until it is completely absent. It is a condition that can cause discomfort because it interferes with language and swallowing, also making it difficult to use dentures.
Causes
The increasing age causes a salivary reduction, but many diseases and conditions can contribute to xerostomia:
• Sjogren’s syndrome
• Rheumatoid arthritis
• Systemic lupus erythematosus
• Diabetes
• HIV and HCV Infections
Causes include radiation therapy, surgery, and the use of some medications:
• Antidepressants
• Antipsychotics
• Antihistamine
• Bronchodilators
• Diuretics
That is, those drugs that inhibit salivary secretion, but that can sometimes stimulate xerostomia without blocking the salivary flow.
Symptoms
The symptoms initially do not occur with dryness but with a “foamy” or dense saliva, with burning while rubbing the tissues of the mouth. There is the need to take more fluids, especially at night followed by the absence of salivation with the associated conditions:
• Halitosis
• Difficulty in drinking
• Eating/speaking
• Appearance of injured areas with burning
